| The
quest for spirituality
By Pamela Nine Martinez, Ph.D. |
Spirituality
is one of the most widely-used terms in today’s society.
Within the term and practice of spirituality, there is acceptance
for all religions and beliefs.
During
a persons’ physical existence, one may at some point
reach an inner longing for more fulfillment in their life.
This is primarily, when a search for spirituality begins.
The search begins in different ways and depends upon our
background, what is going on in our present life, and the
goals or aspirations we hold for our future. The realm of
spirituality can be found in many places. It can be found
in churches, by intellectual means, books, teachers, and
some find the spiritual kingdom within themselves.

| The
"Eye in the Pyramid" symbolizes the Universal
Consciousness behind all things. Christians recognize
it as a sign of the one God manifesting through the Father,
Son and Holy Ghost "Trinity."
In other cultures and times, it has been symbolic of how
our one consciousness remains with us through all three
ages of our lives: youth, adulthood, and elder years.
The
three points of the triangle stands for birth, life and
death, and the eye in the center is that which is beyond
them. The triangle has many meanings, all of them having
to do with unity in healing and becoming whole in oneself.
It is one of the most widespread and oldest symbols in
the world.
The
Eye is symbolic of the eternal soul, and perception and
inner awareness associated with the “Third Eye”
and the “All Seeing Eye.” In ancient Egypt
the Third Eye was also associated with the Eye Of Horus,
who was the falcon god that soared above the realms of
gods and goddesses, symbolizing the ability of an initiate
to rise above the planes of illusion.

Peace
Prayer
Lord, make me an instrument
of
thy peace:
where there is hatred,
let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
Divine
Master grant that I may
not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive;
in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying
that we are born to eternal life.
~ Saint Francis of Assisi

The
American Indian is of the soil, whether it be the region
of forests, plains, pueblos, or mesas. He fits into the
landscape, for the hand that fashioned the continent also
fashioned the man for his surroundings. He once grew as
naturally as the wild sunflowers, he belongs just as the
buffalo belonged....
Out of the Indian approach to life there came a great freedom,
an intense and absorbing respect for life, enriching faith
in a Supreme Power, and principles of truth, honesty, generosity,
equity, and brotherhood as a guide to mundane relations.
You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a
circle, and that is because the Power of the World always
works in circles, and everything tries to be round.....
The Sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round
like a ball, and so are all the stars. The wind, in its
greatest power, whirls. Birds make their nest in circles,
for theirs is the same religion as ours....
Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing,
and always come back again to where they were. The life
of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so
it is in everything where power moves.
~ Black Elk (Oglala) 1863-1950

Sun
Dance Prayer
"Great
Spirit, Our Father, help us and
teach us in the way of truth;
and keep me
and my family and my tribe
on our true Father's path,
so that we may be in good condition
in our minds and in our bodies.
Teach all of the little ones in Your way.
Make peace on all the world.
We thank you for the sun
and the good summer weather again;
and we hope they will bring
good crops of grass for the animals
and things to eat for all peoples."

She
is 92 years old, petite, well poised, and proud. She is fully
dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with her hair fashionably
coifed, and her makeup perfectly applied, in spite of the
fact she is legally blind.
Today
she has moved to a nursing home. Her husband of 70 years recently
passed, making this move necessary.
After
many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing
home, where I am employed, she smiled sweetly when told her
room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator,
I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including
the eyelet curtains that had been hung on her window. "I
love it," she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old
having just been presented with a new puppy.
"Mrs.
Jones, you haven't seen the room... just wait," I said.
Then she spoke these words that I will never forget: "That
does not have anything to do with it," she gently replied.
"Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.
Whether I like my room or not, does not depend on how the
furniture is arranged. It is how I arrange my mind, and I
have already decided to love it.
It
is a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have
a choice. I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty
I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or I
can get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do work.
Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I will focus
on the wonder of each new day and all of the happy memories
I have stored away... just for this time in my life.
